Explore our Rich Heritage (Get to Know the Area)

The area surrounding the Secret Lake is rich with vibrant history, dating back thousands of years. Whilst you’re reconnecting with nature, rediscover the past with Europe’s largest dolmen, only a few minutes drive away. Brownshill Dolmen is a site truly to behold – marvel at the ingenuity involved in the construction of this pre-historic relic from a long bygone era, that still stands today. Walk around the newly refurbished grounds, and feel the past calling.

Close by you will also find the Haroldstown Dolmen, although visitation is trickier as it is on private land, with no parking available. Dwarfed by Brownshill, its presence helps solidify the importance of the area to our ancient ancestors, and it is easy to see why.

Perhaps most stunning of all is Duckett’s Grove – a beautiful 19th Century Gothic mansion, still standing proud today, albeit quite drafty. Sitting on a once 12,000 acre site, this behemoth has seen the landscape change for close to two hundred years. With a rich history, from the story of its construction, to its use during the War of Independence, and of course, its untimely demise due to fire in 1933, the grounds of Duckett’s Grove transport you back to a long-forgotten time. Soak in the opulence, and let your imagination run wild.
